The “Pursuit of Happiness” is a fundamental principle in the Declaration of Independence. It asserts that individuals have the right to happiness, which is considered unalienable, alongside life and liberty. This concept reflects Enlightenment ideas, particularly those of philosophers like John Locke, who emphasized individual rights and personal freedom.
![]() | Does Housing fit with the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness expressed in the Declaration of Independence? |
The Pursuit of Happiness sounds libertarian, promoting the individual not hampered by government interference. But I think there is something deeper, intended or not. It is difficult to pursue happiness when you are out in the cold. The situation could be because of bad choices, family drama, job loss, health problems etc. This person needs help!
On the other end of the slide rule of wealth is the person building a new mansion on the lake who owns a pillow factory. If the person above who lost his job can get help, secure a place to live, find a new job and get back to pursuing happiness along with some new pillows. They both win!
Challenges to Providing Affordable Housing are:
supply, costs, and stability
Many households struggle to pay for housing and endure associated hardship.Proposed changes to federal policy threaten to restrict housing assistance for millions, including nearly 200,000 people who were chronically homeless but, are currently living in housing that’s funded, at least in part, by the Feds.
The Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies has released its annual housing report, finding that affordability challenges and economic uncertainty are hurting housing markets across the US. The report points to slowing household growth, weaker housing construction, rising housing costs, and a severe shortage of affordable housing.
The homeless population in the United States increased by 48% between 2015 to 2023. According to the 2023 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress, the number of individuals experiencing homelessness increased in 43 states and the District of Columbia between 2022 and 2023. Roughly 653,100 people were homeless on a single night in 2023 compared to 582,462 people in 2022. This is a 12% increase and the largest count of homeless individuals since reporting began in 2007. Families with children experiencing homelessness also rose by 17% compared to 2022 an increase of 24,966 people.
Promising Solutions: When communities focus on securing homes, as opposed to “management” or punitive policies, the number of homeless people decreases. Helping people exit homelessness quickly, works.
The Housing First Model
Providing permanent housing to homeless individuals without preconditions has been shown to effectively reduce homelessness and improve overall well-being. This approach prioritizes providing immediate access to permanent, subsidized housing without prerequisites. It aims to achieve stability with a reliable home and voluntary supportive services.
Home Ownership!
The city of Detroit is working on creative housing initiatives aimed at helping homeless individuals transition to home ownership. There are developments in Detroit that include affordable housing specifically designed for owner-occupants. These initiatives reflect a commitment to provide shelter but also to empower individuals and families to achieve long-term stability and community integration.
Everyone Benefits! Reducing homelessness is usually presented as charity or social responsibility. But it can also be viewed as a sound economic investment that benefits virtually everyone, including the wealthy.
